The controversy over nullification surrounded the Tariff of 1828 ( "Tariff of Abominations") which was enacted into law in May 19 ,1828 during the presidency of Andrew jackson. It was designed to benefit industry because the north was going out of business because of low priced of imported goods. This Expensive tariff trigured the near decade long nullification . People in the south especially were outraged from this unfair tariffs. Since the south didn't manufacture goods , they were more affected and several states had formal protests. The reason for this was because the high tariffs increased the cost of importations and benifited the manufacturers of cloth which was the north. It also shrunk the need for Southern raw cotton and increased the final price of manufactured goods. John C. Calhoun was a former tariff supporter of 1816 but realized that if he wanted a good future in south carolina then he should change his views. Some found that the tariff was a convenient Scapegoat from the hard times of the south and it would be a perfect excuse to secede from union. Luckily Calhoun came up with the doctrine of "Nullification" which was a better solution. He came to the conclusion that since the federal government only existed from the will of the state, then the sate had the power to nullify any law that they felt was unconstitutional and could void it within their borders. This reaction to the tariff would lead to the Nullification Crisis.
